The Issue

Each year, many lives are tragically lost on UK roads due to preventable accidents involving foreign tourists who are unfamiliar with our traffic rules and do not pay attention to road signs. As someone who works in traffic management, I have experienced numerous near misses myself. It is alarming to see how misinterpretation of simple yet vital signs, such as the universally crucial 'STOP' sign—depicted in white lettering on a red background—leads to unnecessary accidents and even fatalities.

Tourists visiting the UK may have limited awareness of our road systems, which are often different from their countries of origin. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge can result in dire consequences, not only for the drivers themselves but also for pedestrians and other road users. To mitigate this risk and save lives, it is imperative that tourists wishing to drive on UK roads are required to pass a basic highway code test before being granted permission to drive.

Implementing a mandatory highway code test for tourists is a realistic and simple step towards boosting road safety. Not only will it enhance the understanding of our local road systems among tourists, but it will also save lives, reduce the burden on emergency services, and create a safer environment for everyone.

In 2019 alone, there were over 25,000 serious accidents on UK roads. Many of these incidents involved drivers who were unfamiliar with the UK's road laws. Such statistics underscore the pressing need for reform. Countries like Finland and Japan require foreign drivers to familiarize themselves with local traffic laws as a step towards securing a temporary driving permit. If these nations can successfully implement such measures, so can we.

The introduction of this initiative would involve minimal cost in comparison to the lives that could be saved and the countless heartaches that could be avoided. We urge the UK Department for Transport to consider the implementation of a mandatory highway code test for all tourists intending to drive on UK roads. This measure is a practical, sensible, and necessary response to an urgent problem.

Please join us in advocating for this vital change that could prevent avoidable accidents and ultimately save lives. Sign this petition to show your support for a safer and more responsible driving environment in the UK.
