Implement a Four-Day School Week with Later Start Times

Implement a Four-Day School Week with Later Start Times
The Issue
Every morning, I watch my children struggle to wake up and prepare for a full school day that starts too early and exhausts them by the end of the week. This is not just our family's struggle; millions of families across the nation face the same challenges. Our kids should not have to suffer from sleep deprivation and stress just to meet outdated schedules that do not cater to their health and mental well-being.
The current school schedule, with early start times and five days a week, does not correlate with the realities of children's and teenagers' natural sleep cycles. Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that about 70% of teenagers get less than the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep per night. Early start times contribute significantly to this sleep deficiency, which leads to increased stress levels, lower academic performance, and a higher risk of mental health issues.
And a school done a test when they have started school at 10am and the school used to have 40% of people in school 5 days a week but after they have down the test it was 90% of kids went into school so they all got enough sleep and they all went in
We propose a change to a four-day school week, beginning at 10:00 AM and concluding at 4:00 PM. This schedule not only allows students to get adequate rest but also provides an additional hour of learning to ensure educational standards are met. Schools that have adopted a four-day week with extended hours have reported improved attendance, higher student engagement, and cost savings.
Moreover, students having a three-day weekend gives them ample time for rest, family activities, and pursuing interests outside of academics. It promotes a healthier work-life balance and better mental health, which are crucial for personal development.
We understand that this shift requires careful planning and policy adjustments, but the long-term benefits to our children’s overall health and learning outcomes make this change necessary and worthwhile.
Join us in advocating for healthier, more balanced school schedules that prioritize sleep and well-being over rigid tradition. Sign this petition to encourage education policymakers to reevaluate and reformulate our school timetables for the benefit of our children's futures.
