Implement a Four-Day School Week for Better Student Health and Performance

The Issue

I, like many other students, dread the sound of my alarm clock at 7 AM on Monday mornings. The thought of facing another five-day school week after only two days of rest is exhausting. It's not just about wanting an extra day off; it's about our health, our performance in school, and our overall well-being.

Research shows that insufficient sleep among students is a significant public health issue that can affect academic performance. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), teenagers should get between eight to ten hours of sleep each night for optimal health. However, with the current five-day school week structure and early start times, this becomes nearly impossible.

By implementing a four-day school week with three-day weekends, we would be providing students with more time to rest and recharge. This could lead to improved academic performance as well as better mental and physical health among students.

Moreover, several schools across the U.S have already adopted this model successfully. For instance, in Colorado's Garfield School District No Re-2 which switched to a four-day week in 2012 reported improved attendance rates among both teachers and students (National Education Association).

We are not asking for less education; we are advocating for smarter education - one that takes into account the needs of its learners beyond just academics but also their physical wellbeing.

It's time we prioritize student wellness over outdated traditions. Please sign this petition if you believe in creating an educational system that values quality over quantity - one where rested minds lead to thriving learners.
With this idea we can make people have a smarter education and give them a break since with breaks it gives us energy to work and to focus on our education. Sign this petition and share it out to your friends and family members who agree with this idea so this can get noticed by schools and districts around the country.
