The Issue

Growing up in Uddingston, I've always felt a strong connection to friends who live in nearby Newton. Yet, the current public transport options between the two areas make it incredibly challenging for us to meet. The absence of a direct train service from Newton station to Uddingston station forces us to endure a complicated and time-consuming commute involving multiple changes. This not only strains our friendships but also impacts the broader community, including students at Uddingston Grammar School who face similar obstacles.

The distance between Newton and Uddingston is only about three miles. However, without a direct train line, many are discouraged from making the trip, leading to isolation and a diminished sense of community. Studies have shown that better connectivity between communities can lead to increased social cohesion, economic growth, and improved mental well-being. Not only would a direct train line facilitate easier access for friends and family, but it would also bolster local businesses by bringing in more visitors and encouraging economic activity.

A direct train service between Newton and Uddingston could also reduce the carbon footprint of our community. According to Transport Scotland, increasing accessibility to public transport options can significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to our national targets for climate action.

We propose a direct train service from Newton station to Uddingston station that doesn't require transfers at intermediary stations, such as Cambuslang or Motherwell. This solution would improve the quality of life for daily commuters, families, and young people relying on public transport to maintain their social and educational relationships.

By investing in this infrastructure, we can transform everyday interactions, making both daily commutes and spontaneous trips affordable, convenient, and environmentally friendly. Let's push for a direct train line that brings our communities closer together, promotes sustainability, and fosters closer ties among neighbors.

Please sign this petition to urge local authorities and ScotRail to implement a direct train line from Newton to Uddingston and help transform our transport system and our community.
