The Issue

My 12-year-old nephew was hit by a car yesterday at a crosswalk across from his school. Despite following all the rules - crossing with the lights flashing and sounds going off - he was struck by an inattentive driver. This incident occurred right after school had let out, amidst the bustle of departing students and buses. The crosswalk, located near the school premises, lacks a crucial safety measure - a crossing guard.

This accident has left my nephew with broken bones and an experience that will likely haunt him for years to come. But this is not just about one child's traumatic experience; it's about ensuring that no other child has to endure such an ordeal.

In Canada alone, pedestrian injuries are one of the leading causes of injury-related deaths for children 14 years of age and under (Parachute Canada). A significant number of these accidents occur when children are coming or going from school (Safe Kids Worldwide). The presence of crossing guards can reduce child pedestrian crashes by more than half (American Journal Public Health).

Trenton, Quinte West needs to prioritize our children's safety over anything else. We must implement measures like placing crossing guards at busy intersections near schools where young students aged 11-13 frequently cross.

Let us ensure that our kids can walk safely to and from their schools without fear. Let us make sure what happened to my nephew doesn't happen again! Sign this petition today demanding Trenton City Council implement crossing guards at all major school crosswalks immediately!
