Implement a 4-3 lane road diet on Geneva Street (QEW to Scott)
The Issue
Geneva Street through the Fairview Mall Area is one of the most treacherous corridors for drivers, and especially for cyclists. So I would like to see the city of St. Catharines repaint the corridor as a 3-lane road (1 travel lane per direction with a center turning lane).
The current 4-lane setup requires drivers to stop in the "fast" lane to make a left turn into a store or apartment complex. This poor design has lead to numerous rear-end crashes and sudden lane changes. There are also no bike lanes along this section, meaning that cyclists must share the road with drivers.
The vast majority of Geneva Street outside of this area is only 1 lane in each direction. 2 lanes per direction through a city have lots of conflict points, enables speeding, puts vulnerable users in extreme danger, and is unnecessary for such a short distance of road.
By repainting this section as a 3-lane road, the number of collisions will be reduced, average travel speeds will drop and cyclists will feel significantly safer! The leftover space can be transformed into protected bike lanes as there are no neighbourhood routes nearby to ride between Scott Street and the QEW Highway crossing.
Road Diets are a very easy and cheap way to make our streets safer for all users!
