Implement a 20mph Speed Limit in Levens Village for Safer Streets

The Issue

Do you have a minute?  That is the time difference on travelling 30 mph through our village and travelling at 20 mph.

That minute reduces the chances of death from collision with a vehicle by a massive 80%!

As residents of Levens, Kendal, we are deeply concerned about the safety of our children and community members. Our village has expanded over recent years with more families moving into the area. However, there is a lack of pathways and street lighting which forces pedestrians to share space with vehicles. This increases the risk of collisions and puts our loved ones in danger.

Our children should be able to access school, parks, friends' houses without fear. They should have the freedom to explore their village and enjoy their youth without parents being in constant state of alert due to speeding traffic. We don't want our children's exposure limited or confined to indoor activities such as phones and tablets due to parental fears.

Levens has a diverse range of road users including delivery drivers, cars, tractors , lorries and cyclists - all sharing these same roads with pedestrians due to lack of pathways.

We propose implementing a 20mph speed limit throughout Levens village as it has been proven that lower speeds reduce the severity of accidents (source: Department for Transport). This will make our streets safer for everyone - especially our children who deserve safe spaces for exploration.
