Implement 0 & 7th Period Physical Education for EHS Freshmen

Implement 0 & 7th Period Physical Education for EHS Freshmen
The Issue
As part of the EHS community, we have a need to bridge a gap that exists between our high school and DHS, in terms of granting our freshmen students similar academic options. Currently, our incoming freshmen are faced with a 6-period bell schedule that restricts them to only ONE elective (vs DHS allowing their freshmen to choose TWO), forcing them to choose between languages, music (non-band), arts, and career pathways. This creates a challenging situation for students as they try to fulfill their language requirements early (3 years is what most of our students will end up taking) while at the same time pursuing other interests like orchestra, choir, jazz band or career-related subjects such as engineering and biomedicine.
We are requesting zero and 7th period PE which we believe could be the most practical option for EHS administration (in terms of staffing and costs), thereby giving most of our students the best chance to choose two electives, and cater to the diverse interests and ambitions of our students. Alternatively, other subject(s) could be considered for 0/7 period based on staffing availability, and/or match bell schedule at DHS, but the bottom line being: we are requesting for our students to be given TWO elective options.
The campaign is not just about changing the curriculum, but about embracing our students' aspirations and giving them the same platform to succeed as those of our neighbors at DHS. We believe that this will enhance their high school experience, elevate EHS’ tremendous potential, and help cultivate their skills and passions they wish to carry forward. Thank you very much for this consideration.
**UPDATE**: As of Sunday 1/26/25 (just four days after this petition was created), over 1,000+ parents and students from our EHS community have come together to make their voices heard on this matter. This demonstrates that this is not a one-off request from only a few people, but rather an issue that an overwhelming majority of our EHS community feels very strongly about and is willing to stand behind.
*UPDATE*: As of Tuesday 2/4/25, the EHS community was notified that 0 period options have now become available for PE (2 classes), as well as two of our most in-demand electives: Spanish 2 and Biomed. We want to sincerely recognize EHS leadership for hearing our voice and being able to offer these new options to our students.
