The Issue

As Bosniaks, we refuse to stay silent while the director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center, Emir Suljagic, engages in genocide denial rhetoric, when that very institution stands on the blood of our martyrs and victims of genocide.

As recent developments emerge regarding an Israeli death penalty law targeting only Palestinians, many Bosnians are outraged that neither Emir Suljagic nor the Srebrenica Memorial Center have publicly condemned this atrocious new law which will allow the hanging of Palestinians by their oppressors. For an institution grounded in the memory of genocide and injustice, this silence raises serious questions. Reports over the years have documented the illegal detention of innocent Palestinians, including minors as young as three years old. Given these concerns, we ask: will the Srebrenica Memorial Center take a clear position on policies that could have severe consequences, such as hangings, for Palestinian civilians, including children?

Suljagić has opened the doors of the Srebrenica Memorial Center to members of the World Jewish Congress, a wealthy Zionist organization that works directly with “Friends of the IDF,” the largest charity funding the Israeli military. That same network has directed over $250 million toward the destruction of Gaza, and Suljagić has hosted figures who have financially contributed to it within one of the most sacred sites of Bosniak suffering: The Srebrenica Memorial Center.

When Suljagić said that “Gaza is not our battle,” he failed to acknowledge that his own actions have already made him part of that “battle,” by choosing to maintain relationships with networks connected to those carrying out the genocide in Gaza.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center carries a moral obligation to uphold the same standard of justice it demands from the world, and that obligation is being fundamentally compromised. The first step toward restoring that integrity is the immediate removal of Emir Suljagić from his position.

This petition is in honor of Rasmi, young man who worked in a community health program in Balata Refugee Camp in Nablus, West Bank, where he spent his days caring for men and women suffering from chronic illnesses. Rasmi was shot and killed by the Israeli military. He was shot in the abdomen with dumdum bullets which expand in your body and shred all of your internal organs. These dum dum bullets are illegal under international law because of the severe damage they cause.

The the IDF uses these illegal dumdum bullets  to murder Palestinians, and Zionist figures like Emir Suljagic stand behind the institutions that fundraise for the "Friends of the IDF." The same IDF that killed Rasmi with illegal dumdum bullets.
