Dear Sir / Mdm,
I am writing in to petition for IMDA to grant an exception for the upcoming Hong Kong blockbuster - Anita to be screened in Singapore Cinemas in the original Cantonese track.
This movie is a tribute to Hong Kong superstar, Anita Mui, who had passed away at the age of 40 in 2003 due to cervical cancer. The movie has generated significant interest since it was announced and we are glad that we have the opportunity to watch it in Singapore. Unfortunately, besides 1 original Cantonese screening organised by the Singapore Chinese Film Festival (which was met with overwhelming response on the day tickets were released and have caused the booking website to be overwhelmed), the rest of the mainstream screening will be dubbed in Mandarin, in line with the current policies of only screening movies in Mandarin.
Unlike most other Chinese movies where the dubbing of the movie to Mandarin does not greatly affect the context of the movie, I believe the dubbing of this movie in Mandarin will greatly affect the context and full appreciation of this movie. For e.g. the stellar performance by the lead actress (Louise Wong), who had trained hard to play the role and even mimic Anita Mui's speaking accent will lose its shine when it is dubbed in Chinese. We also understood that the songs performed will also be in Original Cantonese, thus only the actor / actresses voices are dubbed in Mandarin.
We also understood that the movie is screened in selected parts of China and Taiwan in original Cantonese, which is an exception from the norms as similar to Singapore, where Chinese movies are usually screened there with Mandarin dubbing.
Given the current unprecedented times, where we cannot travel to neighboring countries to watch the movie in Cantonese, coupled with the now more generally accepted use of dialect in Singapore (as seen in local movies screened in cinemas, online streaming platforms - including advertisements by the Singapore Government and shows by Mediacorp, paid streaming services), I would like to urge IMDA to grant a one-time exception to allow this movie to be screen in Cantonese (or at least to have certain screenings in Cantonese)
