Some dogs see snow and run for the fireplace. Livestock guardian dogs and sled dogs see snow and think, “Finally, perfect weather.” Breeds like Great Pyrenees, Colorado Mountain Dogs, Maremmas, Anatolian Shepherds, Huskies, St. Bernards, Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Chow Chows have thick double coats that act like built-in winter gear. While we bundle up in hats and gloves, they are calmly patrolling farms and ranches. For these breeds, winter is not a hardship. It is their element.

This petition aims to raise awareness about cold-weather working dogs. These are not typical house pets. They are purpose-bred working animals who often prefer the snow, open air, and staying with their livestock. Yet farmers and working dog owners are frequently reported for animal welfare checks simply because breed-specific needs are misunderstood.

Unnecessary reports can lead to:

Stress on the dog
• Disruption of livestock protection
• Shelter overcrowding
• Strain on animal control resources

We are calling for recognition of breed-specific standards when evaluating cold-weather care. Livestock guardian dogs and sled dog breeds are biologically adapted to outdoor winter environments. Their welfare should be assessed based on coat type, working role, body condition, and access to shelter, not a one-size-fits-all indoor pet standard.

By signing this petition, you support education, informed evaluation, and compassionate, common-sense care for cold-adapted working dogs who thrive in winter conditions.
