The Issue

Teacher of the Year, Resigns due to District Abuse

As my school’s Teacher of the Year and my district’s Blue Ribbon Teacher of the Year, I write this with immense pride in my students, but a heavy heart for my profession. After years of fierce dedication, I have made the difficult decision to submit my resignation.

My story is an all-too-common one: widespread boundary violations and abuse from parents, met with a severe lack of support from district leadership.

If a system cannot sustain or protect its recognized top educators right here in Nashville, Tennessee, the system is fundamentally broken. My resignation is not an isolated incident; it is a blueprint of the silent crisis forcing exceptional teachers out of classrooms across America.

When dedicated educators feel compelled to leave the field, it is no longer a warning sign—it is an emergency. National data reveals that nearly 50% of new teachers leave within five years, and over 50% of all current teachers are actively looking for the exit or advising others to stay away from the profession. This mass exodus is fueled by unsustainable stress, toxic environments, and a complete absence of institutional accountability. When we fail teachers, our students lose the experienced, passionate educators they deserve.

Our Reforms:

Our public education system must change. We demand that school districts prioritize teacher safety, wellness, and structural accountability by implementing the following reforms:

1  Increased Support and Protection: Establish secure, independent channels for teachers to report harassment or abuse from any source without fear of professional retaliation.

2  Administrative and District Accountability: Implement objective measures to hold district leaders accountable for supporting staff, retaining educators, and maintaining transparent communication.

3 Expertise-Based Compensation & Sustainable Workloads: Move past empty praise and performative appreciation weeks. Districts must invest in competitive compensation scales that accurately reflect an educator’s advanced degrees, specialized credentials, and professional expertise. Furthermore, workloads must be mathematically sustainable within standard contract hours to actively combat burnout.

4 Enforceable Parent Codes of Conduct: Establish firm, district-wide boundaries for parental communication and behavior. Educators must be protected by enforceable policies that hold toxic or abusive behavior accountable, ensuring school interactions are rooted in mutual respect.

5 Explicit, Non-Negotiable Job Descriptions: Eliminate vague, open-ended contractual language—such as "other duties as assigned"—that districts routinely weaponize to overextend educators. Every role must have an explicit, exhaustive job description. Districts must stick strictly to these defined boundaries, and any duties requested beyond them must be mutually agreed upon and tied to additional, prorated compensation.

Our Targets:

LOCALLY: We demand that Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) leadership immediately review, reform, and enforce their administrative response to targeted teacher harassment.

NATIONALLY: We demand that school boards across the United States adopt strict, zero-tolerance policies for administrative negligence and parental abuse of school staff.

This topic comes up time and time again. It’s time for change to happen! Staying silent ensures nothing changes. I urge you to sign this petition to demand immediate, systemic reform from our educational institutions nationwide. Let’s hold our school districts accountable, protect our educators, and safeguard the future of our students.

Every single person knows a teacher, and every single life has been shaped by one. When you support educators, you protect the future of our children and our communities. We cannot afford to lose any more excellent teachers to a broken system. Please sign, share, and stand with us today.
