If politicians change financial rules, Australians should see if they benefit
The issue
Demanding greater transparency on politician wealth and taxpayer spending
What if Australians could clearly see how politicians’ wealth changes while they make the rules that affect everyone else?
Housing costs are rising.
Tax and investment rules keep changing.
Everyday Australians are under growing financial pressure.
But there is still no simple, transparent way to see whether the people making these decisions personally benefit from them.
That should change.
We are calling for two simple transparency reforms
1. A Quarterly Public Asset Register for all MPs and their immediate families
Updated every 3 months and clearly showing:
- property holdings (including investment properties)
- shares and investments
- assets held through trusts and companies
- estimated market values
- purchases and sales
- quarterly changes in value
Most importantly, Australians should be able to compare politician wealth growth directly against the average Australian household
So the public can clearly see:
- how much politicians’ wealth increases over time
- how much the average Australian’s increases
- whether financial decisions are disproportionately benefiting those in power
- If politicians benefit from the rules they create, Australians deserve to know.
2. A Public Government Spending Register
Australians also deserve greater transparency around how taxpayer money is spent.
Every Australian business is expected to keep detailed financial records and account for spending.
The government should be held to at least the same standard.
This register should clearly show:
- itemised ministerial spending
- travel and accommodation expenses
- consultant and contractor payments
- discretionary spending
- major procurement and service payments
Presented in a simple, searchable public format.
Accountability matters
To ensure these systems work properly, they must include:
- mandatory updates every 3 months
- inclusion of family-held assets
- coverage of trusts and company structures
- strong penalties for deliberately hiding or misrepresenting financial interests
This is not about restricting ownership
Politicians are entitled to own assets.
But Australians are also entitled to transparency.
Especially when decisions around:
- housing
- tax
- investments
- superannuation
- capital gains
- and public spending
directly affect the financial future of millions of people.
If enough Australians support this, it becomes impossible to ignore
At 100,000+ signatures, this becomes a national issue demanding media attention and political response.
The principle is simple
If politicians change financial rules, Australians should see if they benefit.
