The Boundary County School Board has voted to close our ONLY school for disadvantaged/homeless, struggling teens in the county. Their plan is to close a school with emotionally handicapped kids in the middle of the year, taking away their only safety net. The board says this is because the state of Idaho is forcing their hand, when in fact the state of Idaho has given 35 schools several options to "turn-around" and raise their test scores, and we are the only district closing our school. The State of Idaho gives 3 years to implement turn-around! They DO NOT have to close mid-year! BCSD 101 has $1.5 million in their general fund, they can afford to change the math curriculum to meet state guidelines! There are 26 students at Riverside High who otherwise would have dropped out. The school board has voted against their own code of ethics! Riverside has been helping kids for over 10 years, read, write and graduate high school. Riverside High offers a program to kids in jail, helping them continue with their school work while incarcerated. Riverside High is the only School in our county offering clothing & shoes, extra food, basic medical care and social/educational services to homeless kids at no cost to them or tax payers! All 26 kids at RHS receive Title 1 services, a program funded by the federal government to help boost education for low income kids. BCSD refuses to offer these kids the program at the high school. The graduation requirements go up by 6 credits! No notice has been given to any parent of RHS that our school is closing to date! Our school board needs to reconsider this terrible decision! Riverside High School is set to close on Jan 24, 2013; will you sign my petition to KEEP RIVERSIDE HIGH SCHOOL OPEN!?
