Dear Fellow ADU Supporter,
The City of Los Angeles is currently updating its ordinance that regulates Accessory Dwelling Units in response to new state laws. As most of you know, this past September, Gov. Brown signed landmark ADU legislation. Come January 1st, anyone in California may convert any existing accessory structure into a dwelling unit, as long as it meets safety code standards, has a setback sufficient for fire safety and it doesn't exceed 1,200 square feet. If covered parking was taken up by the dwelling unit conversion, it need only be replaced by parking on existing driveways or setback areas. All municipalities must adhere to these regulations no matter what local ordinances they have. However, cities may craft ordinances that can control the size of a new unit, its location, and certain parking requirements. The City of Los Angeles has written a proposed ordinance that will be presented to the Planning Commission on December 15th. While far better than its old predecessor, the soon to expire 1985 Granny Flat ordinance, there are several proposed regulations in the new ordinance that many of us would like changed or improved and we would like your help with that, either by speaking in person, sending a letter or preferably BOTH!
