Dear Fellow ADU Supporters, Governor Brown has signed AB 2299 and SB 1069! The new law will go into effect January 1st. Thank you all for your support! This is a big win for housing in California. Thousands of people in the state will now have the ability to legalize their unpermitted garage conversions or convert their existing garage into an ADU without the burden of dealing with outdated and irrelevant local zoning regulations, and if they choose, legally rent out their units. This will have long term positive effects on housing in our state. I am, however, not closing this petition just yet. I may redirect it toward the Los Angeles City Council. There have been a small but vocal group of Nimby residents who wish to see the city revert back to its highly restrictive 1985 "grannyflat" ordinance, with its maximum allowable ADU square footage of 640 square feet and it's minimum lot size requirement of 7500 square feet, a figure that many believe would be illegal under state law since there are entire neighborhoods that couldn't make that lot size minimum. If that were to happen, it would subvert some of the positive effects that state law has to offer. I will keep you all posted but in the mean time our sincerest thanks go out to Assemblymember Bloom and Senator Wieckowski for their bold and innovative thinking in finding sensible and workable ways to tackle the housing issues we are challenged with in our state. And of course a thank you to the Governor for believing in both bills and signing them into law. Feel free to write thank you notes to all of them!
