I say #YesToAccess for Persons With Disability and the Elderly

The Issue

Imagine a world without spectacles, wheelchairs, or sign language – these are crucial things that makes life easier for everyone.

Accessibility is when the needs of people with disabilities are specifically considered, and products, services, and facilities are built or modified so that they can be used by people of all abilities. It makes using technology, getting information, and moving around spaces easier for everyone.

For people with disabilities and older individuals, accessibility gives more freedom to be a part of society without facing unnecessary difficulties. By understanding and meeting different needs, accessibility makes sure that everyone has the same chances, making society fairer and more equal.

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we unite to celebrate diversity and embrace the principles of inclusivity. Together, we recognise the importance of creating a world where every individual, regardless of their abilities and age, has equal access and opportunities. Join us in taking the ‘Yes to Access’ pledge: I pledge to make a positive impact by saying yes to access in the following ways:

I will actively support the creation of inclusive spaces in my community, workplace, and public areas, ensuring they are welcoming and accessible to everyone.

I will use my voice to raise awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and the elderly, promoting understanding and empathy within my social circles and beyond.

I will take the time to educate myself and others about the diverse needs of persons with disabilities, fostering a culture of acceptance and inclusion.

I will celebrate the diversity of abilities within our community, appreciating the unique perspectives and contributions of every individual.

I will encourage businesses, organisations, and institutions to adopt inclusive practices, recognising and supporting initiatives that prioritise accessibility.

I will be a supportive ally to persons with disabilities and the elderly, actively listening to their experiences, understanding their needs, and will stand up against discrimination and exclusion.

By taking this pledge, I commit to being a part of a movement that promotes accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for all. Together, let us create a world where everyone can thrive, contribute, and participate fully in the rich tapestry of our shared human experience.
