Stop the abusive use of animals in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here

The Issue

For as long as the show has run, every year, an abhorrent amount of animals are abused for means of “entertainment”.

The RSPCA has said: "animals have been dropped, thrown, handled roughly, crushed, chased, overcrowded, scared by contestants and prevented from escaping from stressful experiences." It is not only us television viewers noticing the archaic animal cruelty on this programme - it’s the RSPCA themselves as well.

Rats are frequently used in trials. They are enclosed in tiny places and are subject to awful conditions; campmates crushing them, hurting them whilst them themselves are in panic, cramped with other insects and in unhygienic conditions etc. Rats can suffer severe health complications as a result of stress; tumours, heart complications, respiratory complications etc. Worst of all, these are NOT wild rats. These are tame rats, rats who will not bite and defend themselves, rats who will cower in fear. In a recent episode of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here 2020, Mo Farah completed a trial where he put his hands, blindly, into holes in the wall to retrieve a star. In one of these were around 4/5 rats. As he put his hand into this tiny hole the rats were showing extreme and explicit signs of stress, with one cowering by a wall. To make it worse, the hole in which they were in was minuscule and in awful condition - rats are extremely susceptible to respiratory illness, meaning this fleeting means of “entertainment” could easily leave them with a fatal illness.

Furthermore, 2/3 large pigeons were shoved in another cramped hole in terrible conditions. We need to make this sick producers of this programme realise whether a 12 minute “trial” is worth the wellbeing of these animals.

All animals want to live free from harm. They deserve better than to be used in irresponsible and inhumane stunts in an attempt to boost ratings.

This disregard for life also sends a dangerous message to viewers that abusing animals is acceptable and even entertaining.

The show has been running for almost two decades now, but its producers are still stuck in their cruel ways – even though people in the UK voice their disgust at the blatant animal abuse shown every year.

This is animal abuse.
This NEEDS to be stopped.
