The MHSAA representative council met on March 25th. There is now officially an adaptive category for track and field in the state of Michigan!!! WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Here's what we know:
During regionals and finals (which are MHSAA sponsored events), there will be a wheelchair category in the 100m, 200m, and 400m, as well as shot put. Adaptive athletes can earn points for their team, can advance to the next level of competition, and can set state records. AND this will all be implemented for the 2022 track season, which has already started. This is the competitive model we have been lobbying for.
For regular season play, individual conferences will establish their own rules. We have already reached out to state organizations to support conferences with best-practice models, and will continue to do so. Adaptive athletes need to be able to participate during the regular season in order to MAKE it to regionals and finals - obviously - and we're here to make sure that happens as well.
We need to get kids out there competing, because the more adaptive athletes participate, the more leverage we have to push for even more events, and an ambulatory division. The work is far from done. But the adaptive category is established. It's a WIN. And a win feels pretty darned good. Go pat yourself on the back for being a part of the change. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
