I Am an Athlete, Too: Integrate disabled children into school sports

Meet Maria. She is fighting to integrate athletes with disabilities in school sports, not just as a spectacle to show token accommodation, but as adaptive athletes who score points in an adaptive category. Disabled kids should have the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers to earn a varsity letter, progress to state finals, earn state-level athletic accolades, and be valued team members.
The current fight is for track & field since it is so simple to integrate adaptive athletics. Almost every state has some model in place to allow adaptive athletes the same opportunities for placing and advancement, but Michigan and 13 other states do not.
Join us in our fight to bring awareness to this issue, change current rules regarding adaptive athletes in track & field, and show all of the other potential adaptive athletes that they are an athlete, too.
