*Update* Please view the update here or on the ig page @oc.change to learn about more ways you can further this cause! This includes emailing HBUHSD Board leaders, attending the Board meeting, etc.
HBUHSD should allow teachers to remain fully online if they choose to do so. Teachers should not have to choose between their job or their health.
HBUHSD leaders sent out an email on Friday, Dec. 4 announcing that it is requiring all virtual teachers to return to campus starting Jan. 5 or take a leave of absence.
There are a handful of teachers who are high risk, have pre-existing health conditions, live with high risk family, or many other factors that could prevent them from coming back to school. Staying home is not something they choose lightly, but it is out of necessity, out of safety.
COVID-19 cases in Orange County are reaching almost 2,000 daily cases and a new record of 746 hospitalizations. OC was put in the purple tier for reopening, the most restrictive tier. There have been 38 confirmed cases of students and staff at HBUHSD alone (emphasizing confirmed, as there are many people who don't get tested regularly).
We're supposed to be working to contain the spread of COVID-19, not putting hard-working teachers at a higher risk. If students can choose to be completely online, teachers should have the right to do that too.
You cannot risk teachers' lives for the sake of saving money. To get good students, you need to protect the teachers.
