Encourage and enable food growing on nature strips.

Encourage and enable food growing on nature strips.
The issue
1.We call upon Hume City Council to develop a policy and subsequent guidelines that are easy to find, easy to understand and simple to use for its diverse population.
2.We ask that Council also provide a forum for the issues of insurance and indemnity to be discussed including an exploration of alternative possibilities and models.
In light of changing environmental conditions, threats to energy and food security, urbanisation and population growth; pressure to produce food in our urban settings will increase as it becomes harder to sustain the urban environment.
We acknowledge that ‘common sense’ guidelines should apply - that gardens must be safe, must not obstruct foot or vehicle traffic, must allow for the opening of car doors and must receive regular care and maintenance.
We ask that all guidelines are sensible and support the environmental and community benefits to be gained from curb-sides that feed and connect neighbours.
