My name is Taya Caesar, I am a first-year Practical Nursing student at Humber Polytechnic emailing you both on behalf of many of my frustrated peers. This morning on February 21st , 2025, at 12:16am, second-semester Practical Nursing students received an email from our Faculty Head detailing a time schedule and compulsory ancillary fee for the GPA Training Program. We understand fully the excellent learning opportunity this program presents us students; however, find it deplorable to provide financially struggling students one business day notice prior to the billing deadline.
One of Humber's values is Equity. Stating, "We cultivate an environment where all individuals can achieve their full potential," (Humber Polytechnic, 2025). Achieving one's full potential also entails the accessibility of resources to accomplish said potential. This late notice caused the Thursday, February 20th payment date to be inaccessible. The Ministry of Colleges and Universities of Ontario protects students from such untimely, unorganized, egregious demands. According to The Ministry's Tuition and Ancillary Fees Reporting Operating Procedure, all Ontario Colleges must provide the student body notice of all ancillary fees "...announced through the college's calendar and/or college’s website before the deadline for accepting offers of admission for new students, and by the deadline for returning students," (Ministry of Colleges and Universities, 2022). The Practical Nursing Program should have been made aware of this ancillary fee and mandatory program by January 14th, 2025 - the deadline for returning students and new admissions for the Winter Term (Admissions, 2024).
Many students- including myself- are managing compulsory courses, volunteer hours, full-time work schedules and other personal commitments. We urge the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness to waive this $78.00 GPA Training Program fee in compliance with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities' Operating Procedure. Please empathize with the struggling student body that you work for to advocate Courage, Equity, Health and Well-Being (Humber Polytechnic, 2025).
With humility and sincerity,
Taya Caesar
