Human trafficking-A repercussion of one's destiny
The Issue
MEANING
As defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, human trafficking is the unlawful act of transporting or coercing people in order to benefit from their work or service, typically in the form of forced labor or sexual exploitation.It is a widespread issue and is mostly prevalent in rural India.
ISSUEHuman trafficking is the height of human right violation, resulting inthe loss of the basic human right 'Freedom'.Though it is considered to be ‘illegal’.In 2022, India's National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported over 6,500 cases of human trafficking, with women and girls accounting for 60%. Experts believe the actual figures are significantly higher due to widespread underreporting.
EFFECT
The victims are affected not only mentally but physically as well. Mental trauma which has long-term consequences on their life.Social prejudice leads to marginalization. Human rights are violated, and the sufferer becomes embarrassed and isolates themselves from society. As a result, they are wary of becoming victims again.Physical health issues like bruises and scars, or even sexually transmitted diseases , as a result of sexual trafficking, forced labor, and other factors.In some situations, it can lead to suicide.
OUR PERSPECTIVE
We partnered up with two non profit organizations Kshamata and Urja who provide shelter for women who are human trafficking survivors and assist them to restart their lives.They offer a variety of courses, employment opportunities as well as counselling for the victims to regain their potential. As mentioned by both the ngo’s they give the survivors their first friends, family, first experience of self employment, first job and a place they can trust no matter what.We had the opportunity to interview a survivor of this harmful menace who was living in Kshamata(the ngo).When we interviewed her we were shocked to see the level of confidence and potential she had ,she was a multitasker from being a baker to a calligraphy enthusiast she had it all.Despite the hardships she faced she was so full of life and was eager to learn and be so much more than she already is.She had faced numerous challenges and was an introverted girl who had given up on her dreams due to the circumstances, but with the help of the organization, she rediscovered what she loved; she was now open to discussions, and her verbal skills were top notch ,her level of confidence and optimistic nature inspired all of us.
DEMAND
There are numerous cases, who have lost their lives due to human trafficking.We urge policy makers and the relevant authorities in India to strengthen the laws and improve the conditions in the sensitive areas.It is rightly said that the world is not mine, but ours so let’s make it a better place to live in.By taking 10 minutes of your time and signing this petition you express your support and are helping numerous such girls to showcase their inner potential.
