Using the N word, by Non-Black people needs to STOP
The Issue
The N word has been so normalized through out the last few decades. The N-word, a derogatory word used toward Black People, dates back to a time of struggles, battles..pain.
Throughout the last few decades, the N word has become so normalized. We hear it in Hip hop, RnB, Rap music, we hear it from members in the Black community, our Black brothers and sisters and suddenly that seems to give the rest of us access to the word as well? No. It does not. It should never make you feel okay for using the N-word yourself, especially if you are Non Black.
I am a South Asian female. Honestly speaking, my closest friends were all black, and around my teenage years, I remember hearing the N word so often that I am guilty of saying it myself. I never said it, nor meant it in a disrespectful way, but I realized we are all guilty of using the N word because of how normalized it has become. In reality though, our ancestors, grandparents, parents, etc were not effected by this word, so do we really understand how disrespectful it is? Probably not. I took it in myself to never use that word again, just because we hear it in our music, or from our fellow black friends, does not give us the key to using it ourselves.
George Floyd did not die in Vain. He has opened up the widest spread of attention towards Black People, and Anti Racism. I may not be Black myself and feel the real pain of my Black sisters and brothers but I am tired of this word being used so freely. Yes, many of us do not use it with the intent to harm or disrespect another but this word holds a history of pain. We need to take it out of out vocabulary. We need to stop ourselves when it slips off our tongues. There is certain words in this world where even saying it from our mouth feels wrong, the N word needs to be seen like that too. Let's bring this attention to everyone across the world. Lets all support our Black brothers and sisters, and stop using the N-Word. Teach others to stop using it, teach your children, your students, your families. Spread the word. Lets bring light to this issue and stop the mentality that using the N-word is "ok".
