Protect Narragansett Bay from polluters

Protect Narragansett Bay from polluters
The Issue
Dear Friend of Narragansett Bay,
We ask you to join Save The Bay in urging RI Governor Gina Raimondo to fix what is broken: the capacity of the State to enforce the environmental laws that protect Narragansett Bay. Read our Open Letter to the Governor here.
Why Now? The Governor is preparing the State’s next budget. She will submit that budget to the General Assembly early in 2016. Her budget is a statement of priorities.
Background: A decade of cuts to environmental protection has undermined our State’s ability to enforce environmental laws consistently and fairly. When these laws are not enforced: 1) pollution threatens and damages our environment and most precious natural resource, Narragansett Bay, and often, the damage is irreversible; 2) the health and safety of Rhode Islanders are put at risk; 3) businesses that violate the law can gain a competitive advantage over those that play by the rules; and 4) taxpayers can wind up paying the price for environmental cleanups that could have been prevented.
Sign our petition and send the message to Governor Raimondo and legislative leaders today that:
- An investment in enforcement protects our natural resources from lasting damage and saves taxpayer dollars.
- A healthy environment and Narragansett Bay is critical to Rhode Island’s economy, tourism, recreation and beauty. It makes sense to protect our most important assets.
- It is unacceptable that violators can gain an advantage by not investing in the pollution or safety controls required by law. When deciding to locate or stay in Rhode Island, companies that play by the rules need to know they will be treated fairly.
This is not a problem that Governor Raimondo created. Prior administrations have cut resources to our environmental agencies or perpetuated the problem for years. JOIN US in asking Governor Raimondo to use the upcoming budget to give our environmental agencies the resources they need to protect and safeguard our environment and our greatest natural asset, Narragansett Bay.
