Amazing news! Yesterday the House of Lords voted to change the government’s Welfare Reform and Work Bill to keep measuring child poverty.
This is a big deal – it means the government will be forced to reconsider their plan to just define poverty as how well kids do at their GCSEs and whether or not their parents have work.
Thank you all so much – the petition was mentioned in the debate yesterday.
I couldn’t make it to Westminster but the Child Poverty Action Group was there to discuss the petition with Lords and make sure they knew what you thought about the government’s plans.
It's astounding that the House of LORDS is proving to be more in touch with the electorate than the (elected) House of COMMONS!
Anyone who’s been there knows that poverty is mainly about a lack of money. It would have been ridiculous to have child poverty measures that ignore that. I am grateful for the support of 50k who felt strongly enough to sign the petition.
If the Lords’ amendment becomes law, we will see how the government was trying to cover up substantially missing its own targets and failing to tackle child poverty.
The fight isn’t over yet – I’ll be in touch when I know more about what needs to happen next to make sure the government listens to the House of Lords and keeps on measuring child poverty properly.
In the meantime – thank you!
Rebecca
