Mental health has become such a big problem in recent years and many lives are lost to suicide every day. Although there are services about, we feel that if every pupil had a compulsory counselling session every half term that some people who might not have otherwise asked for help can talk about their problems. These sessions can then be followed up however frequently required and correct referrals and safety plans can be put in place for everyone who needs them. These sessions could mean someone gets help early enough that it could save their life. Mental health is just as important as physical health and just like you’d see a doctor or dentist every 6 or so months a similar concept should exist for mental health. If all schools had at least one fully trained counsellor it could also reduce the pressure put on NHS services. It could also help students get help for mental health issue they may not have known or noticed they had. Even for students who don’t need help for mental health, a counselling session could reduce stress and prevent the onset of mental health in the future.
