Remove them, or set and enforce strict guidelines for the protection of the animals.
The Issue
Every year the Horses of Helen stand in the heat on the burning hot asphalt day in and day out with no shade, forced to pull heavy wagons full of tourists. The horses are supposed to be brought out of the heat once the temperature reaches a scorching 90*f. Unfortunately, this does not always happen and is rarely enforced. Not only that, but having them in the first place is an impediment of traffic, and a driving hazard as they slowly trek down main street. On top of all that, years of walking and standing on hard concrete with the carriages strapped to them is unnatural, and puts wear on the legs, knees, and hips of the horses. Changes need to be made to protect these animals. I understand that not every owner is irresponsible, but the horses that are left in the sun after the others are taken have no one to speak for them. They cannot tell you they need water, and rest, and shade. We have to be that voice for them. We need to rally together to let the city of Helen know that we, the public, have seen the mistreatment of these animals and that we demand change.
