We commend Hornsby Shire Council on their Climate Wise Hornsby Plan adopted in March 21, but it must commit to 100% clean electricity.

At the moment, Hornsby Shire Council buys 100% dirty polluting power with NO renewable component at all. As stated in Council’s report, one third of Council’s measured emissions comes from its corporate electricity consumption (35%), while another third comes from electricity consumption from public street lighting (35%). By transitioning to 100% renewable electricity Council can achieve a significant reduction in its emissions immediately.

The 2020 Climate Reality Check published by Breakthrough – National Centre for Climate Restoration states “The short term is crucial: what we do now and before 2030 matters”. 

Hornsby Shire Council is due to start a new electricity supply contract. We (the signatories of this petition) urge council to aim for a new contract which sources 100% renewable electricity immediately.
