mPower a computer math game is slowly being rolled out across the province; presently it is available only to a fraction of Ontario K-2 students, but should eventually be available to all K-6 students. This game specifically states that it to help students learn fundamental math skills and has been made in cooperation with TVO. I have not seen the game since it is available only to teachers and some K-2 parents, but I would definitely like to hear from anyone who has first hand experience with it. stingers101@live.ca There definitely is some movement towards ensuring that students learn basic facts, but I expect that this is very inconsistent and informal. As yet the curriculum has not been rewritten and there is a huge emphasis on inquiry methods by a number of agencies and branches of government concerned with math education. I do have some concerns: 1 Are parents expected to do the bulk of this work? Do teachers have sufficient time in school to work on mPower and are parents simply expected to review material learned at school? 2 How much screen time is there at school? Will any paper and pencil resources be provided to children and teachers? 3 What is the quality and content? However, thousands of people have signed this petition; many thousands more have written letters, commented in newspapers, spoken on the radio and expressed their concerns to teachers, principals and school boards. Dr. Craigen and Dr. Stokke have written excellent articles in national newspapers. Many Ontario journalists, reporters, radio hosts, editors and TV personnel have done tremendous work on this issue. Public pressure does work; I heard specific reference to this public pressure at a meeting I attended several months ago. The powers that be feel the pressure, not sure how much they understand though. This is only a very small first step and there many more improvements that must be made to ensure that Ontario students get a complete and thorough math education. Once again I would like to hear from ------ stingers101@live.ca 1 anyone who has used any type of tutoring - learning centre, private tutor, parent or other family member. 2 anyone who was not able to hire a tutor or regrets not having hired one. 3 anyone who has seen mPower, has any comments, suggestions, or good contacts. Thank you very much for reading and speaking up. Teresa Murray, Hamilton, Ontario.
