Judge Danny Chun gave Marcell 19 years to life. This young man refused to take a plea and the district attorney vengefully charged him with first-degree murder, felony arson and assault. The jury, upon rendering their verdict asked for leniency because it was clear that the incident was an accident. Judge Chun could Grant leniency to Peter Liang, but not Marcell Dockery who was sixteen years old when his supposedly set the mattress afire. Liang killed Akai Gurley in the stairwell and did not render aid. Marcell according to police confession set the mattress aliget but thought he had put it out. When he did notice the fire spreading he ran to notify his neighbors to get out them out. Marcell said this confession was coerced out of him by NYPD, who are notorious for their handling of the Central Park Five. The Central Park Five is representative of other cases where black and brown youth were forced to confess by the NYPD only to be exonerated years later. Unfortunately, Marcel's case is not unique in the New York City criminal court system. Everyday, black and brown people are forced to confess and take pleas for crimes they did not commit, because the alternative is to face an excessively harsh prison term or languish in jail for years awaiting trial. We must have criminal justice reform and end judicial and legal lynchings of teenagers like Marcell.
