National Lake Conservation  plan
Rabindra Sarobar is an artificial lake in South Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal. The name also refers to the area surrounding the lake. It is flanked by Southern Avenue to the North, Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road to the West, Dhakuria to the East and the Kolkata Suburban Railway tracks to the south.
Few years back this lake was recognised as National Lake by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate change under National Lake Conservation Policy.
Immediately at least 4ft desiltation or toxic mud removal is necessary to save this 90 acres lake which is a large cabon basin and lung of South Kolkata.
The depth of the lake is hardly 5ft which was initially 25ft. After the year 1921 when dredging took place for formation of this artificial lake till date no action was taken for the removal of mud which is toxic in nature to conserve the bio diversity of the lake. The water in lake is polluted now for deposition of huge poly packs in the mud.
Periodical cleaning after proper desiltation is advisable to upkeep the environment of lake . So many clubs are polluting the lake water by throwing waste materials and a masjid in lake island discharging untreated sewerage regularly resulting havoc degradation of ecological balance and biodiversity. Apart from arresting air pollution and oxygen generation this lake is very useful for rainwater harvesting and ground water recharge including culture of flora & fauna.
So appeal to KMDA & MOEFCC as an environmentalist & Citizen of Kolkata to improve the depth of the lake by proper cleaning methods.
