The Issue

On October 23, 2020, my cousin Wynter made a profound and heartbreaking decision to transition to another place. She sat on a bench in a park in Englewood , gazing at the water, ensuring her beloved son would be taken care of, and then she walked into the water, where she tragically drowned. Wynter's life was a testament to the struggles faced by many dealing with mental illness, a very real concern that needs to be addressed with the utmost seriousness.

While Wynter's transition was a personal and private moment, her story is one that resonates deeply with those who knew her and countless others who understand the pain of losing someone to mental illness. In her memory, it has been my heartfelt wish to honor her by establishing either a commemorative bench or a beautifully painted memorial in that same park, where she last found her peace.

Despite my efforts over the past two and a half years, progress has been challenging. I have met with the city of Englewood but more support and advocacy are required to bring this tribute to fruition. This isn’t merely a matter of placing a bench; it’s about creating a space where others can reflect, remember, and feel connected to Wynter's enduring spirit. It’s about raising awareness and opening dialogue around mental health — issues that are often hidden in plain sight.

With a memorial in place, Wynter’s story could inspire change by encouraging discussions around mental health in our communities. It would serve as a reminder that we need to support each other, to reach out, and to listen more intently.

By signing this petition, you are not only honoring Wynter's memory but also helping to break down the stigmas associated with mental health. We urge the local authorities in Inglewood to approve and facilitate the establishment of this meaningful tribute. Join us in our mission to memorialize Wynter and stand as a beacon of hope and awareness for those who struggle in silence. Please sign this petition to help bring this project to life.
