The Issue

Petition to: The President of the United States and the U.S. Congress

Every American flag is held together by thread. You don't see it. It runs through every seam, holding the stars and stripes in place. Without it, the flag falls apart.

Black and Brown hands sowed the fields that made America the most prosperous country on earth. They planted it, picked it, and built on top of it — the roads, the railroads, the cities, the wars fought, the culture shaped. The wealth of this nation was grown, in large part, by people history refused to name.

They sowed the fields. Let us sew the flag. We're asking the U.S. government to change the thread used to construct the American flag to black — in their honor.

Not the stars. Not the stripes. Not the colors, the design, or a single thing you see when the flag flies. Only the thread inside it — the part that holds everything together.

This is recognition, not replacement. It doesn't take anything away from the flag. It tells the truth about who built the country the flag stands for.

And it's achievable. The design of the flag is set by Executive Order 10834. The construction of government flags — including the thread — is set by a federal specification the executive branch controls and has revised many times. The President can direct that change without Congress. To reach every flag made and sold in America, Congress can pass a law. We're asking both to act.

The people who held this country together belong in its most sacred symbol. Sign, and help us put this in front of the people who can make it real.
