To everyone who has signed and supported Project Dignity—thank you.
Because of you, we’ve made progress.
WVSHI Inc. has received a formal response from the state regarding our request to assume ownership of the Weston State Hospital Cemeteries. While ownership was not approved at this time, the door is not closed.
What has happened is a step forward:
The state has invited WVSHI Inc. to become part of a collaborative effort alongside others involved with the cemeteries. We will have a voice at the table—something that has been missing for far too long.
But make no mistake—this is not the finish line.
This is the starting line.
We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the state and other groups, but the ultimate goal remains the same: permanent care, security, and dignity for the more than 2,300 individuals buried in these cemeteries.
And we still believe that future ownership by WVSHI Inc.—a dedicated organization built around preserving and honoring this history—would best position us to achieve these goals in cooperation with all parties currently involved.
The state has not said ‘no forever.’ They have said ‘not now.’
If that time comes, our vision for ownership has never been about excluding others. We believe the best future is one built on cooperation—where WVSHI Inc. holds the responsibility, but all who wish to contribute are welcomed and valued.
No one will be shut out.
So what do we do now?
We take what we’ve been given—we work harder, we work together, and we show them what we are capable of.
We build this collaborative relationship with the state and others.
We prove our value.
And when the time is right—we ask again, with your voices behind us.
That’s why this petition remains active.
That’s why we are setting a goal—5,000 signatures.
When we stand together with 5,000 voices calling for lasting change, the state will have no choice but to listen.
This is not over. It’s just beginning.
We are moving forward—but we need you with us.
Will you stay? Will you push harder with us? Will you stand with us—until those buried at Weston finally receive the dignity they deserve?
Sign, share, and let’s finish this together.
Because they are seen. They are heard. They matter.
