Honor the Army National Guard at the Army/Navy Game in 2025.

The Issue

Throughout its football season, the Black Knights of the United States Military Academy (USMA) honors some part of Army culture and history in the uniforms they wear at each game, to include the various branches that cadets can work in when they graduate and become officers in the US Army to historic units in the Army.

The Army/Navy game traditionally takes place on the second Saturday of December, which coincides with the Army National Guard's birthday of December 13, and the Army/Navy game has been played twice on December 13 during the 124 times it has been played and WILL do so again in 2025.

The Army National Guard traces its history to December 13, 1636, making it the oldest component in the United States military. Army National Guard Soldiers have served our nation honorably and professionally during the past 388 years, in particular the past 20 years, serving aboard in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, as well as serving in all 50 states and US territories supporting COVID related missions, natural disasters, and other missions in their respective states.

Many of the officers that graduate from the USMA go on to serve in the Army National Guard, including the recently retired GEN Daniel R. Hokanson who was the Chief of Staff for the National Guard and Guy R. "Bear" Barattieri a 1992 USMA graduate that played football for the Black Knights and went on to serve in the Washington Army National Guard and was ultimately killed in 2006 while serving in Iraq.   It is also not uncommon for some cadets to serve in the Army National Guard, before they enroll at the USMA as a way to learn about the Army and leadership, some of which may even come back to the Army National Guard later in their careers.

It is time for the Black Knights to honor the Army National Guard with their uniforms and doing so at the Army/Navy game would be the ultimate honor for the oldest component in the US military because the game takes place so close or on the Army National Guard's birthday and WILL take place on the 389th birthday at the Army/Navy game in 2025 and also do so in 2036 when the Army National Guard celebrates 400 years of honorable and professional service.

GO GUARD!
