In 1939, Opal Lee's safe haven turned into ashes as her family home was set ablaze in a wave of racially-fueled hatred. It was Juneteenth, a day meant to commemorate freedom, yet young Opal was faced with a harrowing reminder that true liberty was not yet a reality for Black Americans. However, this painful incident ignited a lifelong mission in Opal to champion for freedom, equality, and unity for all.

Fast forward to present day, Dr. Opal Lee, endearingly known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," has become a national figure in the fight for recognition and civil rights. It wasn't just through words; it was through action. With her spirit enflamed by perseverance, Opal led the charge in the movement that successfully pushed for Juneteenth to be recognized as a federal holiday, a milestone in acknowledging the history and struggles of African Americans.

Opal's pursuit of bringing human dignity to all Americans expands to people and communities all across our nation facing injustice and systemic exclusion from the American Dream.

For the past seven years, We have had the honor of working closely with Opal Lee. Together, we have walked countless miles in Opal's Walk for Freedom, bearing witness to her relentless dedication and inspiring spirit. Our work is a tribute to her indomitable courage and determination, and now, we are also filming a documentary to capture her extraordinary journey for posterity.

Yet, even as federal legislation honored Juneteenth, the narrative and struggle Opal represents deserve a lasting tribute. I call upon each of you to join me in urging our nation to erect a statue of Opal Lee at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. This tribute, overlooking the Reflecting Pool, would not only immortalize her legacy but also serve as a symbol of unity and freedom—a daily reminder that our steps towards equality continue.

By placing Opal Lee's statue beside one of the most iconic sites of civil rights history, we honor her personal sacrifices and her unyielding hope for a better future.  Approximately 35 million people are drawn to the most visited destination in Washington D.C.,  The National Mall.

Erecting a statue of Dr. Opal Lee completes the trinity of the Lincoln Memorial, the Historic "I have a dream speech", and the recognition of un-freedoms in African American history through the federalization of the Juneteenth Holiday. The Lincoln memorial was the beginning of the chapter and adding a stature of Dr. Opal Lee bookends the story of freedom in America as we look out and reflect on our nations history and set our visions for the future. Dr. Opal Lee spent her life as an educator and social impact leader; exactly the kind of modern American hero that represents us all to the visitors of the National Mall.
