The Issue

On July 7, 2026, our friend Liberty Newton (Libby) tragically lost her life after being struck by a train at Carkeek Park in Seattle. Although there is a pedestrian bridge that provides a safe way to cross the tracks, many people still walk along and explore the railroad tracks.

This section of track is especially dangerous because it curves west toward Puget Sound, causing the sound of an approaching train to carry away from people on the tracks. Combined with the high speeds trains can travel through this area, people may have very little warning before a train arrives. This stretch of railroad between Carkeek Park and Golden Gardens has claimed numerous lives over the years, demonstrating that this is not an isolated tragedy but an ongoing public safety concern.

We are asking BNSF Railway, local officials, and other responsible agencies to evaluate and install additional safety measures at this location, such as flashing warning lights, audible sirens, motion-activated alerts, or other solutions that could warn people when a train is approaching. We also hope similar safety improvements can be considered at other major waterfront parks and beaches throughout the Seattle area where active railroad tracks are nearby.

Implementing flashing warning lights and audible sirens could provide clear, immediate alerts and help improve safety for everyone visiting these areas. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, properly designed warning devices can significantly reduce railroad crossing accidents. Even a few extra seconds of warning could save a life.

Our goal is not to place blame, but to honor Libby's memory by helping prevent another family from experiencing the same heartbreaking loss. Every signature is a voice calling for meaningful action to make these areas safer and help save lives. Together, we can turn tragedy into positive change.
