The Issue

Nearly five years ago, the world watched in horror as George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer — an act that became a global wake-up call to the deep, systemic racism in policing.

In the aftermath, people took to the streets demanding change. The Justice Department stepped in. After investigating the Minneapolis Police Department, they confirmed what our communities already knew: unconstitutional policing was not an isolated incident — it was a pattern. A consent decree was created as a first step toward meaningful reform.

Now, just days before the anniversary of George Floyd’s death, Trump’s DOJ is trying to throw that progress away. They’ve announced plans to cancel the consent decree that would hold the Minneapolis Police Department accountable and protect our communities.

We cannot let that happen.

This isn’t just about policy — it’s about memory. It’s about the promise we made to George Floyd’s family, to our neighbors, to our children: that we would never allow this to happen again.

We call on Mayor Jacob Frey, the Minneapolis City Council, and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights to stay the course. No matter what happens at the federal level, Minneapolis must continue implementing the reforms outlined in the consent decree. Every sentence. Every paragraph. Every promise.

If the federal government walks away, we won't.
