Honor Fallen DeKalb Firefighter Preston Fant with Lasting Memorial

Honor Fallen DeKalb Firefighter Preston Fant with Lasting Memorial
The Issue
On Monday, DeKalb County lost one of its finest. Master Firefighter Preston Fant, a 21-year veteran of the department, died in the line of duty while attempting to rescue a fellow firefighter during a warehouse fire on South Stone Mountain Lithonia Road.
Fant was overcome by fire conditions, trapped as he tried to save another, and later died at Grady Memorial Hospital. He is the first DeKalb County firefighter to die in active fire combat, and his loss has shaken the community to its core.
But for his family, the grief goes even deeper. Preston Fant leaves behind his wife and five children. He was not only a firefighter but also a father, a husband, and a mentor to countless others at Fire Station #24. His colleagues describe him as a father figure, someone who lifted others up, trained the next generation, and embodied the selfless service that defines true heroism.
As the county mourns, we must also take action. Families of fallen firefighters should never have to wonder if they will be financially secure after a tragedy. Supporting them is the very least we can do in return for the sacrifices made.
We call on DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners, and Fire Chief Darnell Fullum to provide full survivor benefits, educational support for Fant’s five children, and permanent recognition of his service and sacrifice. His bravery must be remembered not only in words but in deeds that care for those he left behind.
Firefighters run into danger when everyone else runs out. Preston Fant gave everything to protect his community and his brothers in uniform. Now it is our turn to protect his family.
Add your name if you believe DeKalb County must honor Master Firefighter Preston Fant’s sacrifice with lasting support for his wife, children, and legacy.
