The Issue

We, the undersigned residents, neighbors, and friends of Illinois, proudly support House Joint Resolution 46 (HJR0046), introduced by State Representative Lisa Davis.

This resolution honors the vibrant Palestinian American community by designating the stretch of Harlem Avenue (State Route 43) between 79th Street and 111th Street as “Little Palestine Way.”

For decades, Palestinian families have been part of the fabric of Bridgeview, Burbank, Chicago Ridge, Palos Hills, and Worth. Their businesses, cultural centers, and places of worship have enriched the local economy, strengthened neighborhoods, and shared their heritage with everyone. “Little Palestine Way” is a small but meaningful way to recognize that contribution, just as Illinois has honored many other communities throughout its history.

This designation does not change the official name of Harlem Avenue. It simply celebrates the story of one community that has helped make Illinois home for all.

Why We Support the Honorary Designation
1. Public Roads Can Unite by Recognizing Everyone
Honoring cultural communities is inclusive, not divisive. From “Chinatown Way” to “Little Italy” and “Polish Heritage Corridor,” Illinois has long recognized the diverse people who built this state. “Little Palestine Way” continues that tradition of celebrating everyone who calls Illinois home.

2. Symbolic Recognition, Minimal Cost
Honorary designations are symbolic and low-cost. The state already funds similar recognitions for veterans, first responders, and cultural communities. Recognizing heritage does not take funds away from road maintenance; it simply adds pride to the places we share.

3. A Positive Precedent
Celebrating one community does not diminish others. On the contrary, it encourages future recognitions and fosters pride in every group’s contributions and stories. Illinois is strongest when every resident can see themselves reflected in its landscape.

4. Community Voices Have Been Heard
The Palestinian American community has been rooted along Harlem Avenue for decades. Local leaders, business owners, and residents have expressed overwhelming pride in this effort. This resolution honors that lived reality and reflects what already exists: a thriving, welcoming community known as Little Palestine.

5. Building Understanding, Not Division
Acknowledging a community’s presence is not political; it is human. In times of global tension, gestures of respect remind us that our neighbors are defined by shared hopes, families, and contributions to the common good. Recognition builds bridges, not barriers.

6. Fairness and Equal Recognition
Illinois has celebrated the heritage of countless groups. To exclude one community would send the opposite message of equality. True fairness means ensuring every group, including Palestinian Americans, has the same opportunity for recognition and pride.

Our Call to Action
We stand with Representative Lisa Davis, the Illinois General Assembly, and the many Illinoisans who believe our state is enriched by all who live here.

Join us in supporting “Little Palestine Way” as a symbol of pride, unity, and respect for every community that helps make Illinois home.
