Honor enrollment commitments for Pittsburgh Public Schools Elementary Magnet students

Honor enrollment commitments for Pittsburgh Public Schools Elementary Magnet students

The Issue

We urge Pittsburgh Public Schools to allow all current magnet school students in grades K-3, who were accepted during or before the 2024–2025 school year, to remain at their magnet school until completion of the final grade level offered — as promised in their acceptance letters.

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and community members, respectfully call on Pittsburgh Public Schools and Superintendent Dr. Wayne Walters  to honor the original commitments made to families of magnet students accepted before or during the 2024–2025 school year.

Many of these students, currently in grades K-3, were admitted under the clear condition that they would be allowed to remain at their magnet school through completion of the program (typically 5th grade for elementary programs). This promise was a critical factor in our decision-making as families.

Now, that commitment is at risk of being broken — forcing children to change schools prematurely, disrupting their education, social development, and emotional well-being.

We ask the district to:

- Grandfather in all currently enrolled grades K-3 magnet students accepted during or before 2024-2025.

- Allow them to complete the full magnet program as at their current magnet school originally stated in the acceptance letter.

- Prioritize educational stability, trust, and the well-being of all students over administrative policy shifts.

- If transportation is a factor for the districts abrupt displacement of elementary magnet students that the  district would allow parents the opportunity to transport their own students to and from school.

Children should not have to bear the consequences of policy changes made after the fact. Upholding past enrollment promises is not just fair — it’s the right thing to do.

Let’s stand together for our students and ensure PPS honors the commitments it made to our families.
