Detroit has always been a city defined by resilience but its history has not come without hardship.

Following the Detroit Riot of 1967, the city entered a period of significant social and economic challenges. The years that followed were marked by rebuilding, but also by rising crime, drug epidemics, and limited opportunities for many young people.

Roughly a decade later, a young man named Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns would turn professional emerging from that very environment with a story that represented something far greater than boxing.

As a youth, Hearns faced adversity firsthand, including being chased home from school in gang-populated neighborhoods. But instead of becoming a product of his environment, he chose a different path.

Under the mentorship of Emanuel Steward at the Kronk Gym, he became part of a movement that symbolized hope, discipline, and transformation for the city of Detroit.
