Honor 100% Disabled Veterans in Washington – Eliminate Property Tax Requirements
The Issue
I am Mariana Avalos, a resident of Ridgefield, Washington, and an advocate for fairness and dignity for our veterans. I have started this petition because I believe no 100 percent service-connected disabled veteran should have to live near the poverty line in order to qualify for a full property tax exemption.
Under current Washington State law, veterans with a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can only receive a full property tax exemption if their household income falls below a set threshold. In 2024, that limit is approximately $67,000. This includes VA disability compensation and other benefits, which means many veterans who are completely and permanently disabled are automatically excluded.
A veteran who has given their health and ability to serve this country should not have to prove financial hardship to be treated with dignity in their own home. The sacrifice of our veterans is not measured by their income, and the relief they receive should not be determined by it either.
Other states have already recognized this principle. Florida, Texas, and Virginia provide a full property tax exemption to all 100 percent disabled veterans, regardless of income. These states honor their veterans without imposing arbitrary limits that erode the very benefits they have earned.
The Washington State Legislature can and should act now to align our policies with these standards. By removing the income requirement and granting a full exemption to all 100 percent service-connected disabled veterans, we can:
Reduce financial stress for those who are permanently disabled due to their service.
Allow veterans to remain in their homes without fear of losing them to tax burdens.
Demonstrate that our state values and honors the sacrifices made by those who served.
This is more than a matter of tax policy—it is a matter of respect, justice, and moral responsibility. I urge every Washingtonian to join me in calling for this change. Please sign this petition, share it with your friends and family, and help us send a clear message to our lawmakers:
Dignity, not poverty. Full property tax exemption for all 100 percent disabled veterans, now.
