2016 Honda Pilot - Upgrade to Android Auto/CarPlay

The Issue

Honda released the 2016 Honda Pilot with an Android infotainment system. The new 2016 Civic and Accord support Android Auto/CarPlay, however Honda has not committed to updating the 2016 Pilot to support this functionality as some other manufacturers have done with their existing models. We ask that Honda commit to updating the 2016 Pilot to support Android Auto/CarPlay like their other new 2016 models or provide an explanation to consumers as to why they are not able to support this update. Honda's response would be appreciated on this matter one way or another as to not alienate their loyal customer base or current 2016 Pilot owners.

If Honda is unable to support Android Auto/Carplay with existing hardware, we would challenge Honda to find a solution to make it compatible. Many petitioners have mentioned if Honda would not be willing to fit the bill, could Honda offer this to existing owners for a fee (ex. $500 or another nominal fee)? We look for Honda to provide a response that reflects their commitment to their customer base like other automakers (ex. Hyundai, Kia, etc.).

While the preference would be to have Android Auto/Carplay support, if Honda is unable to support this via any means, rather than abandoning current 2016 Pilot owners, we ask Honda to commit to improving the current infotainment system and providing actual Apps via Honda Link. (Ex. not restart playlist every time car restarts, shuffling, and better playlist functionality, etc.)

The Decision Makers

Honda Motor Company
We understand and appreciate the interest expressed by a number of our 2016 Pilot customers for enhanced connectivity and, in particular, for the application of Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™. Honda has endeavored to bring advanced technologies such as these to its products as early as possible and is among the very first automakers to support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its products. It is important, however, to understand that these are relatively new technologies and that development cycles for new models do not always line up in a way that permits their application on all of our products at the same time. We have looked closely at this issue, and with respect to the 2016 Pilot, the vehicle’s Display Audio hardware is simply not compatible with the application of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the physical update that would be required to make the vehicle compatible would be prohibitively complex and costly. It is our sincere desire that this communication will help customers to understand this situation. Further, we hope that, on the whole, our 2016 Pilot customers are satisfied with all the improvements we have made to the new Pilot, its advanced safety, performance, fuel efficiency and many new comfort and convenience features and technologies. As always, we will continue working to improve and advance our products for the ultimate satisfaction of our customers and we both respect and appreciate the important feedback we have received from our 2016 Pilot customers on this issue.
