Hon.Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda(MoHFW) APSI & NABI- Introduce "National Burn Awareness Day"

The Issue

Burn injuries pose a significant public health challenge in our country, with more fatalities occurring from burns than from diseases like Malaria and Tuberculosis. According to government data, approximately 7 lakh people in India suffer from burn injuries annually, with 1.4 lakh people succumbing to their injuries, and around 2 lakh becoming disabled every year. Alarming statistics further show that 80% of the victims are women and children, highlighting the need for immediate attention and intervention.

As an acid attack survivor myself, I understand firsthand the trauma and pain that victims of such incidents endure. I believe that greater awareness and education about burn injuries can go a long way in reducing the number of incidents and improving the outcomes for those affected. The patients of burns not only suffer physical pain but also emotional trauma and social isolation. It is heartbreaking to see the lives of the patients and their families being destroyed due to burns.

I would like to propose the introduction of a "Burn Awareness Day" in our country.

On this day, hospitals, medical institutions, and the public can unite in raising awareness about burn injuries, their causes, and prevention strategies. This initiative would educate people on the dangers of burns, the importance of safety precautions, and the proper steps to take in emergencies. Hospitals could also host workshops and training sessions for medical staff and volunteers, focusing on effective burn care and treatment.

I am confident that heightened awareness and improved education about burn injuries would significantly reduce their occurrence. A National Burn Awareness Day would provide an ideal platform to inform the public about burn prevention, first aid, and the importance of early medical intervention. Such efforts would not only save lives but also alleviate the long-term physical, emotional, and social trauma that burn survivors endure. Survivors often face immense physical pain, emotional distress, and social isolation, which deeply affect their quality of life. It is heartbreaking to see how burn injuries devastate individuals and their families.

This day could also serve as a platform to raise funds for burn victims, promote research in burn care, and shed light on the psychological toll of burns on both victims and their families. I truly believe this initiative could help reduce the number of burn and acid attack incidents in our country while providing critical support to those affected.

In addition to awareness, the creation of a National Burn Census would allow us to collect crucial data on the causes, frequency, and outcomes of burn injuries. With reliable data, we would be able to identify the primary causes of burns and tailor preventive campaigns accordingly. By targeting the most common causes, we can significantly reduce burn incidents and improve safety practices across the country.

I urge you to consider these measures to strengthen burn prevention and treatment in India. Establishing a National Burn Awareness Day and conducting a National Burn Census will help in formulating better policies, providing appropriate care, and creating a safer environment for the most vulnerable in our society.

Through education, awareness, and sustained support, we can empower burn survivors and acid attack victims to rebuild their lives and regain their dignity.
