Stop the destruction of Sabarmati Ashram

Stop the destruction of Sabarmati Ashram

The Issue

It is admirable that the government intends to take the ideas of Gandhiji to many people. In a period of so much violence internationally, this is a welcomed step. However, in doing so, if the original idea of simplicity gets distorted, and then the world will not know what Gandhiji meant when he said, 'for people to live simply allows others to simply live'.

Since 1917, the Sabarmati Ashram has stood for values espoused by Gandhiji. One of the most important among them is humility. Gandhiji noted that there is enough for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed.

We the undersigned consider the Rs.1200 Crore project for the ashram as not a prudent decision. Converting an openly accessible ashram to a modernized plaza with food courts, business centres and lavish complexes will make it like any other place of commerce in the world. In India's traditional culture, ashram is meant to be a place for reflection and rest. It is meant to be a space where the soul gets nourished. Today's Sabarmati Ashram preserves the values for which Gandhiji stood.  More importantly, it provides people with an experience of peace and nonviolence, which makes it unique the world over.

An alternative suggestion is for it to remain simple, with a free entry-exit, having no tickets and yet with facilities (which are already available). A minimal development would be required and the funds could be diverted to peace and education in the local schools.

Sabarmati is Gandhi's legacy and is a gift to the world. The fact that it continues to be remembered by people in India and globally is because Gandhiji was a towering figure of peace. This can only benefit the country and its people.

We request that Sabarmati be given minor improvements with its current structure remaining unchanged. We look forward to your revising your decision on this matter.
