Ever wondered what Dharma really means and where its origin is from? Let us have a look. "Dhriti Kshamaa, Dheer Vidya, Damo Asteyam, Shaucham Indriya Nigraha, Satya Akrodho Dashakam Lakshanam Dharmaha" - Manu Smriti If we go into detail it is as below: "1.Dhriti (Stoicism/steadiness/patience/firmness) 2.Kshama (Forgiveness/forebearance), 3.Dama (Self-Control/self-restraint/self-command), 4.Asteya (Non-Stealing), 5.Shaucha (Cleanliness), 6.Indriya nigraha (Control of passions & senses), 7.Dhee (wisdom/knowledge/reasoning), 8.Vidya (Spiritual knowledge), 9.Satya (Truthfulness) and 10.Akrodha (free from anger, of calm temperament) are the 10 characteristic traits of Dharma. " Therefore, whoever tells you it is his "Dharma" to do this or that, is confusing "Duty" (Kartavya) with Dharma. As you may see there is no substitute in the english or any other language for the Sanskrit word Dharma. For this very reasoning, trying to understand Indian spirituality through any other language is a fallacious method. This is the reason, friends of the Devabhaashya, that we believe the only way to understand the religion now called Hinduism, which must really be termed "Dharmism", is by understanding it in the language of the Devas, Sanskrit. It has been a while we have passed 900 signatures, and maybe we claimed victory too soon. I am sad to say we are still stuck at 941 signatures, 59 signatures away from the 1000 signature mark, where, as promised, I will personally take a list of all signatories and meet the Hon Minister of Education, Mrs Leela Devi Dookhun Luchoomun. As an aside, please note that a recent survey found above 800 social organisation run schools that give basic Sanskrit courses, however our objective is to have a Sanskrit Scholar in every house. As usual, I request you all to please share this petition on your walls, and have every member of your family, friends and colleagues sign and share the petition as well. Every time we pass a multiple of 1000 signatories, I will again take the list to the Hon Ministers to which this petition is addressed, and re-iterate the request to have Sanskrit introduced as a full-blown subject in the Mauritian Curriculum. Namaste, (My soul pays obedience to your soul) Arvind
