Stop Free School Lunch Packaging Wastage!
Tēnā koutou
We are an Enviroschool in the Far North of New Zealand. As winners of the 2021 Prime Minister's Award for Sustainability in Education we promote sustainable practices in everything we do.
While we really appreciate our free school lunches, we would like to work to find solutions to the amount of landfill waste that is generated by the Ka ora/Ka Ako government initiative.
According to the Ministry of Education website through the Ka ora/Ka ako programme 47,000,000 free school lunches were provided for NZ students by 21 December 2021.The contents of a typical Ka ora/Ka Ako school lunch can include multiple items of packaging such as yoghurt pots, wrappers and containers that are not recyclable and therefore potentially heading for landfills across the country.
By reducing the waste in the free lunches for schools we would be reducing the burden on landfills and helping to improve the future for us tamariki.
